'Would' vs 'used to' for repeated past actions and past habits

Used to. (used + infinitive)

You can use, ‘used to’ to talk about,

  • past habits
  • past states
  • repeated actions in the past that don’t happen now.

Eg

  • I used to play chess when I was young. (I don’t play any more)
  • We used to go swimming in the river in the village.
  • My mom used to take me to school as a little boy.

Would + base form of verb (Do not use would for past states)
We use would in same way as used to.

  • past habits
  • repeated actions in the past that don’t happen now.
    Eg
  • I would walk to school alone.
  • They would go shopping together every weekend.

Note :spiral_notepad: Don’t say these;

  • We would live in Newyork when we’re young.
  • I would look like my dad when I was younger. Use ‘used to’ instead
  • I would be a footballer when I was in high school.

Don’t use ‘would’ for past states, use ‘used to’ instead.
