Why called simple past?
It’s called the simple past tense because it doesn’t need any auxiliary verb to complete it.
It only uses did as the auxiliary verb.

Example:
‘I kicked the ball yesterday.’
All verbs used in the past tense are always in past e.g slept, ate, talked etc
