How do you teach Gerunds and Infinitives?

Sometimes you hear people begin sentences like below.
Teachers :Doing your homework is important.
Doctors: Drinking a lot of water will help.
Traffic police: Over-speeding is dangerous.
What you see above, are called Gerunds in English. Verb + ing

They can be used in a sentence as,
Subject:Drinking a lot of water will help.
Object of a verb: What will help you is drinking lots of water
Negative form: Not drinking water will kill you. (put not before a gerund to make it negative)

What are they?

  • They act as nouns.
    e.g Shopping is fun.

  • They are used as a subject of a verb.
    e. g Swimming is a good sport.

  • They can be used as an object of a verb.
    E.g I like eating out.

  • They too can be used as an object of a preposition.
    e. g Iam good at swimming.
